Higher Power

"What is a Higher Power"?

A higher power is a concept of a spirit, being, force, or energy that is greater than oneself and can affect nature and the lives of people.   Different people may have different understandings of what a higher power is, such as God, the universe, nature, or a supreme being. A higher power is often used in the context of prayer, guidance, or explanation of life and circumstances. A higher power is also a term used in twelve-step programs to help people recover from addiction.

Many individuals struggle with the Faith in a Higher Power.  As the person realizes they are unable to overcome their weakness on their own and that they are themselves powerless, they must then give themselves over to a higher power. This higher power can be whatever the specific member wants it to be.  The higher power does not always have to be a God figure, but depending on the individual’s faith or needs, it may be.

Each person can interpret the “Higher Power” in a way that is most meaningful to them. Some people are unable to explain or label their higher power, which is completely acceptable as long as the higher power continues to play an important role in their recovery.

Alternatives to the concept of God as a higher power may include:

  • Energy
  • Jesus Christ
  • Goddess
  • An Angel
  • A Passed Loved One
  • Buddha
  • Mother Earth
  • Mother Nature or Nature

  • Yahweh
  • The Universe
  • The Father
  • The Holy Trinity
  • Jehovah
  • Nirvana
  • Brahman
