AFFLICTION
The term affliction is generally used to describe a state of pain, distress, or grief. It is often used in the context of serious physical or mental conditions.
In the context of addiction, an affliction could be something about oneself, or one's existence, that is pulling them off balance, and the addiction is what they use to rebalance the affliction.
ADDICTION
Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequence. It often begins as a simple rewarded experience, which through repetition and the rewiring of the brain’s learning and reward circuits can become habitual. If that habit escalates into problematic substance use, we can end up with something that our society has called “addiction”.
AFFLICTED & ADDICTED
In summary, addiction is a habitual behavior that can have detrimental consequences, while an affliction is a state of suffering, which in some cases, might lead to addictive behaviors as a coping mechanism.
